Why quotations vary
Seven things that can change a CCTV installation price
Number of camera views. Covering one entrance is very different from covering a driveway, garden, side access and several business areas.
Detail required. A general overview, recognising a person and capturing useful identifying detail are different design objectives.
Night-time conditions. Distance, street lighting, reflections and completely dark areas affect the camera and position required.
Recording storage. More cameras, higher image settings and longer retention periods can require additional storage capacity.
Cable routes and networking. Long, concealed or difficult routes take more installation time than a straightforward camera-to-recorder path.
Mounting position and access. Height, surface type and safe access can affect labour and whether specialist equipment is needed.
Business requirements. Larger premises, several users and operational areas often need a more detailed recording and viewing design.
Recording matters
What does 1TB of CCTV storage actually mean?
One terabyte describes capacity, not a fixed number of recording days. Retention changes with resolution, frame rate, compression, continuous or event-based recording and how much movement the camera sees.
That is why a useful proposal should explain the camera settings and expected recording approach rather than promising a retention period from the hard-drive size alone. If you need a particular duration, tell the surveyor so the recorder and storage can be specified around it.
Decide which area matters, the distance involved and what useful detail should look like. Camera resolution is only one part of the result.
Nationwide installation
Do CCTV installation costs vary by UK location?
The property and required view normally matter more than the city name. A London apartment entrance, a Leeds stone terrace and a Birmingham workshop yard can each need different fixings, cable routes, lenses and camera positions.
Use the links below for local property considerations and the nearby areas served from each of our main UK location pages.
London & the South
Shared entrances, close neighbouring properties, limited mounting positions and coastal exposure can all affect camera choice and placement.
Midlands
Suburban homes, workshops, retail premises and larger operational yards require very different fields of view and cable routes.
North West
Terraced streets, apartment approaches, customer entrances and commercial sites can each change the number and position of useful cameras.
Yorkshire & the North East
Stone construction, rear lanes, detached garages, service yards and exposed external positions are common survey considerations.
Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland
Weather exposure, traditional building materials and the size of the external area can influence equipment, fixings and installation time.

What should a CCTV installation quotation explain?
Two quotations described as “one-camera CCTV” can contain very different equipment and installation allowances. Check that each one states:
- The exact number and type of cameras
- The intended view and useful detail from each position
- The recorder and installed storage capacity
- How cabling, power and standard installation are allowed for
- The upfront payment, monthly payments and total payable
- Whether app access, servicing or other ongoing options cost extra
- The warranty period and any work excluded from the price
Alarm Plan begins with a free survey and supplies a written proposal, allowing you to understand the views, equipment and full price before deciding. Read our four-step process for more detail.
Common questions
CCTV installation cost FAQs
Does £18.06 per month include the £99 upfront payment?
No. The advertised starter example is £99 upfront plus 36 monthly payments from £18.06. The final monthly payment is adjusted so the total payable is £749 including VAT.
Can I add more CCTV cameras?
Yes. The advertised package is a single-camera starting point. Following the survey, Alarm Plan can quote for the number of cameras and recording capacity needed for the areas you want to cover.
How many days will 1TB of CCTV storage provide?
There is no single guaranteed duration from storage size alone. Retention depends on camera resolution, frame rate, recording mode, compression and the amount of activity in view. Your proposed recording settings are explained with the system specification.
Will the CCTV camera work at night?
The useful result depends on the selected camera, available lighting, mounting position, distance and the detail you need to capture. Night-time performance should be planned during the survey rather than judged from resolution alone.
Is smartphone app access included?
No. App access is not included in the advertised starter package. If it is available for the proposed system, it will be listed separately in your written quotation.
Are servicing and repairs included?
Routine servicing and non-warranty repairs are not included. The advertised starter package includes a 12-month warranty, with the precise coverage confirmed in the written proposal.
